Hello, and welcome to my health journey! Let’s start at the beginning. A year ago, I found myself stuck in a rut, feeling sluggish and constantly battling with my health. Like many of us, I knew something had to change, but where to begin?

On a rainy Tuesday morning, I found myself wandering aimlessly around my local [Surry Hills supermarket](https://www.maloneysgrocer.com.au/) when I stumbled upon their organic food aisle. I had heard friends rave about the benefits of organic food, and as I was desperate to improve my health and get some energy back, I decided it wouldn’t hurt to do a little research. What I discovered was that this simple solution promised profound effects! So, I started to look into it more and decided to give organic food a try for a few months. Little did I know that embarking on this journey would not only revolutionise my eating habits but also transform my entire approach to health and well-being!

Join me as I take you through my personal journey of embracing organic food. I’ll share what I learned that made me decide to change and explain what organic food really is. I’ll also cover the challenges I faced, how I overcame them, and the wonderful benefits that they brought to me! I’ll even give you some advice on how to navigate your local supermarket if you want to embark on your own organic food journey. So, let’s get started, shall we?

### Why I Decided To Make The Change

So, what convinced me to make the change to organic food? Well, I would say it wasn’t just one thing, but many factors that made me decide to try it out. Of course, I was desperate to stop feeling sluggish, sick and tired all the time, so reading that organic food can help improve health was very enticing. But the more I researched about it, the more interested I became. When I learnt about the environmental impact that conventional farming practices can have on our planet, I was motivated to make more sustainable choices. Plus, I had some friends who had already made the switch to organic, and I could see massive improvements in their lives. Then, when I learned that organic food often tastes better than conventional produce, I was completely sold! I decided to give it a try for 3 months, and now, here I am a year later, still eating organic food.

### Understanding Organic Food

If, like me, a year ago, you’ve never really considered eating organic or don’t know much about it, then let me explain a little more. Organic food is more than just a trend; it's a philosophy rooted in sustainable, natural farming practices that prioritise the health of both consumers and the environment. Unlike conventionally grown produce, which may be exposed to synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers, organic food is cultivated using methods that respect the natural balance of ecosystems. Organic farms are filled with lush greenery, where crops are nurtured without the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or artificial chemicals. Organic farmers work in harmony with nature, enriching the soil with compost and natural fertilisers and employing techniques like crop rotation and biological pest control to maintain plant health. The result? Wholesome, nutrient-rich foods that not only taste delicious but also support a healthier planet. From vibrant fruits and vegetables bursting with flavour to pasture-raised meats and dairy products free from antibiotics and hormones, organic food offers a more holistic approach to nourishment—one that celebrates our bodies, our food, and the earth!

### Overcoming The Challenges

As great as switching to organic food is, it has its challenges! One of the biggest roadblocks I faced was accessibility and affordability. Organic food usually comes with a higher price tag than conventional produce, which means I had to think smart and budget carefully! I also use the [Dirty Dozen list](https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/dirty-dozen.php) to show me which products I really need to buy organic and which products I can get away with buying non-organic if I can’t afford it all.

Finding options when it comes to organic food can be a challenge, but I’m lucky to have a fantastic organic supermarket in Surry Hills, not far from my house, that has a fantastic selection of organic food, and the prices are super reasonable, too! If you don’t live in my area, I’m sure you can find a decent organic supermarket near you if you go googling or ask friends who eat organic. I’m also looking into growing my own organic food at home or even joining a community-supported agriculture program, so maybe I’ll do a future update on how that goes!

### Embrace The Benefits

From the moment I made the conscious decision to prioritise organic food in my diet, I felt a profound shift in my overall well-being. Gone were the days of feeling sluggish and weighed down by processed foods laden with artificial additives and pesticides. Instead, I found myself looking forward to meals, enjoying the vibrant flavours and nourishing goodness of fresh, organic produce. Knowing that each bite was free from harmful chemicals and genetically modified ingredients brought me a sense of peace and reassurance, knowing that I was nourishing my body with the purest, most wholesome ingredients nature has to offer. Beyond the personal benefits, there's a deeper satisfaction in knowing that by choosing organic, I'm supporting sustainable farming practices that prioritise environmental conservation and the well-being of future generations.

### How I Navigate the Supermarket

Navigating your local [Surry Hills supermarket](https://www.maloneysgrocer.com.au/) aisles in search of organic food can feel like embarking on a treasure hunt, but with a few savvy strategies, it becomes a rewarding and fulfilling experience! As I stroll through the produce section, I keep an eye out for the *Certified Organic* label. This ensures that the product meets strict Australian standards for organic certification. In the packaged goods aisles, I make sure to check the ingredient lists, steering clear of unfamiliar additives and opting instead for products with simple, recognisable ingredients.

When it comes to meat and dairy, I seek out labels like *grass-fed* or *pasture-raised*, as these are more likely to be organic and free from hormones and antibiotics. It's all about being informed, staying vigilant, and trusting my instincts to make the best choices for myself and my family. And while the selection of organic options may sometimes be limited, I've learned to embrace the journey, knowing that each purchase is a small but meaningful step towards a healthier, more sustainable future.

So that’s my journey so far, guys! I’m happier and healthier than I have been in a long time, and I hope my experience can motivate you to start your own organic food journey. Comment below and let me know if you’ve tried organic food and what your experience was like. I’d love to hear from you. I’ll see you in the next blog!
